One of the best natural harbours anywhere
Shelburne's harbour, and what it grows on your house
Shelburne Harbour is deep, sheltered, and long, which is why the town was a shipbuilding centre for two centuries. It's also why the fog sits. Add the spruce that surrounds every lot outside the historic core and the salt that comes up the harbour on a south wind, and you have the conditions for algae, mildew, moss, and lichen on every surface that faces away from the sun.
The wrong fix is common here: a rented pressure washer on a high setting, which strips old paint and drives water in behind vinyl, and the green is back the next summer anyway. A soft wash kills the growth and leaves the siding alone. It's the method we use on every house. If the term is new, start with what soft washing is.
Communities we cover around Shelburne
Barrington, Cape Sable Island, Woods Harbour and Shag Harbour have their own page. Everything along Highway 3 and 103 between them is covered.
What we see on Shelburne homes
The historic district. Dock Street and the streets behind it hold some of the oldest wood-frame buildings in the province. Painted clapboard and shingle from that era need the gentlest mix we run and a close look at the paint before anything touches it. High pressure on these houses is how paint gets stripped and history gets damaged. We wash them soft, low, and slow.
Sandy Point and the harbour shore get salt straight off the water. Salt film holds moisture against siding, so those homes green up faster than the ones a few streets in.
Lockeport sits on its island with Crescent Beach on one side and the harbour on the other, which means fog and salt from both directions. Cottages, rentals, and the year-round homes along the beach road all take a beating. We group Lockeport work with the rest of the Shelburne side.
