On the Bay of Fundy
Digby's climate, and what it does to a house
Digby sits on the Annapolis Basin with the Bay of Fundy fog rolling through the Gut most mornings in summer. The town climbs a hill, so half the houses have a north wall in permanent shade, and the wind off the water carries salt onto everything. Between the fog, the salt, and the shade, siding here goes green and black on a schedule.
Pressure alone just trims it. The algae and mildew have roots in the siding texture and are back within a season. A soft wash kills them, which is why our house washing in Digby is low pressure and a professional cleaning solution, not a rented machine on a high setting. Read what soft washing is if the term is new.
Communities we cover around Digby
The Clare side of the county (Meteghan, Church Point, Saulnierville) has its own page. The islands are reachable; they take a little planning around the ferries.
What we see on Digby homes
Houses on the hill. Digby's older homes along Montague Row, Water Street, and up toward the Pines are a mix of painted wood, shingle, and vinyl over the original. The north and east faces that never see afternoon sun are where the growth lives. Older paint gets a gentler mix and an honest assessment first.
Basin-side cottages and homes in Smiths Cove, Deep Brook, and along the shore road take salt spray straight off the water. Salt holds moisture, moisture feeds algae, and siding by the water greens up in a couple of seasons.
Bear River is its own world: steep lots, big trees, and buildings that sit right over the tidal river. Shade plus damp means moss and lichen on everything that holds still.
Out the Neck. Sandy Cove, Tiverton, Freeport, and Westport houses face the open Bay. Nothing grows faster than algae on a vinyl wall that gets fog off the Fundy every day. We group Neck and island work together so the trip makes sense for everyone.
Booking from Digby
Digby-side jobs run on route days: a few jobs in the Digby, Smiths Cove, Bear River, or Weymouth area on the same day. That keeps travel off your bill. Tell us where you are and we'll slot you into the next Digby run. A single far-out job can still be quoted; it may just carry a small travel adjustment, and we'll say so up front.
Quotes are from photos, so there's nothing to wait for. Text two photos to 782-446-3384 or use the quote form, and you'll usually have a number within 24–48 hours.
Timing tip: the Basin businesses and rentals want to look right for Scallop Days in August and the Wharf Rat Rally over Labour Day. Book July for those.
